Surface preparation and finishing influence coating adhesion, dimensional accuracy, appearance and the consistency of the final product. Sanding, grinding, polishing, painting and related operations also generate dust, fine particles, overspray or vapours that must be controlled at the workstation.
ALWO configures industrial equipment around the real process: the material being worked, the contaminant released, the production rate, the required finish and the way operators interact with the workstation.
Start with the process and the material
There is no universal extraction arrangement for every finishing operation. Dry wood dust behaves differently from metal grinding particles, paint overspray or solvent vapours. Before equipment is selected, the application should be assessed for:
- the type, size and quantity of particles or vapours generated;
- the location and movement of the emission source;
- the required working area and operator access;
- the duty cycle, simultaneous machine use and cleaning method;
- fire, explosion, corrosion and temperature conditions that may affect the design.
Local capture for preparation operations
For sanding, grinding, polishing and preparation before painting, pollutants should be captured before they spread through the production hall. The solution can include a downdraft bench, extraction wall or a machine connection designed around the direction in which particles are released.
- BAF extraction benches combine a work surface with filter cartridges for suitable dry-dust applications.
- BA benches transfer extracted air to an external filtration unit when central treatment is preferable.
- W water-curtain extraction walls and V dry-filter extraction walls support painting and detailed finishing processes.
- complete finishing lines can connect several preparation, application and air-treatment stages into a coordinated production flow.
Filtration for finishing contaminants
Filtration is matched to the contaminant rather than selected only by nominal airflow. Paint Stop media and labyrinth cardboard filters are used to retain paint overspray. Cyclones can provide pre-separation for heavier dry particles, while centralised filters handle the remaining dust load. Electrostatic or activated-carbon stages may be considered only where the characteristics of the aerosol or vapour make them suitable.
A multi-stage arrangement can protect the final filter, extend service intervals and make collected material easier to manage. Filter loading, replacement access and waste collection should be included in the design from the beginning.
Ductwork, fans and airflow control
The extraction bench or wall is connected to a network designed for stable capture velocity. ALWO can integrate flexible and circular galvanised or stainless-steel ductwork, pneumatic conveying or process-extraction fans, and ATDG or ATDC medium- and high-pressure fan configurations where appropriate.
Manual or electro-pneumatic slide gates and adjustable grilles help balance branches and direct air where production is active. Controls can coordinate machine status, fan operation and filter cleaning so that the installation does not run unnecessarily at full demand.
Integration, safety and maintainability
A well-designed finishing system must be practical to inspect and maintain. Access to filters, collection containers, dampers and cleaning points reduces downtime and supports consistent performance. Any combustible dust, flammable vapour or spark-generating process requires a dedicated risk assessment before the final layout and protection measures are selected.
