Explosion Vent Panels for Deflagration Protection

Explosion Vent Panels for Deflagration Venting

Explosion vent panels are passive protective systems designed to open at a specified static activation pressure and discharge deflagration flame and pressure towards a safe area. Their purpose is to limit pressure inside dust collectors, silos, cyclones, ducts and process vessels; a vent panel does not prevent ignition or the start of an explosion.

Design inputs

  • volume, geometry and mechanical strength of the protected enclosure;
  • combustible-material parameters, including Pmax and Kst where applicable;
  • vent static activation pressure (Pstat) and permissible reduced explosion pressure (Pred);
  • operating pressure or vacuum, temperature and pressure cycles;
  • vent location, any vent duct and the discharge area.

Construction options

  • Rectangular domed: for dust collectors and baghouses, including vacuum and cyclic-duty applications;
  • Rectangular flat: for cyclones and similar equipment;
  • Round domed: for cylindrical ducts and vessels;
  • Curved: for installation on curved walls of cyclones, silos and process vessels.

Panel geometry, material, gasket, operating limits and cyclic-pressure resistance are selected for the protected equipment and operating conditions.

Conformity and system integration

The sizing calculation, product markings, declaration of conformity and applicable certificates must correspond to the selected panel, protected equipment and project requirements.

Safety: the discharge must not face personnel, access routes or enclosed areas. The protection concept may require flameless venting or a purpose-designed vent duct, together with explosion isolation on connected ducts; the vent panel alone does not stop flame and pressure propagation through the installation.
