Spark Detection and Extinguishing Systems for Pneumatic Conveying

Spark detection and extinguishing systems monitor pneumatic conveying ducts that carry combustible dust or powdered material. Detectors sense sparks or glowing particles in the air stream, and the control panel activates the normally closed water solenoid valve and downstream spray nozzles according to the engineered response sequence. The purpose is to reduce the probability that an ignition source reaches a filter, silo or other protected equipment.

Each system must be sized for the actual application. Key inputs include duct diameter and air velocity, detector-to-nozzle distance, total response time, water pressure, flow and quality, material combustibility, ambient conditions, hazardous-area classification and integration with the plant controls. Component selection and the applicable certification depend on the installation and hazardous-area classification.

Safety scope: spark detection and extinguishing reduces ignition risk, but it does not guarantee complete prevention and does not replace explosion venting, suppression or isolation measures where these are required by the risk assessment.

Typical system components

A system is assembled from components selected for the duct, process conditions, response time and site risk assessment.

Component Function
GM826SD/ST Automation and control panel with 8 inputs and 6 outputs; 24 V DC; IP54 controller enclosure
GMSC243TH-EX Spark detector for monitoring the conveyed air stream
GMSUP2-EX-TU Detector mounting kit
GMUGS120 Water spray nozzle with a 120° spray angle
GMELV24-EX Two-way, normally closed water solenoid valve with coil and connector
GMSI24S Audible alarm, 24 V DC, 35 mA, IP55
GMLP24 Visual alarm, 24 V DC, IP55
GMFLTO-10 Water-line filter
GMFROH2-4 Shielded four-conductor control cable

The number and placement of detectors and nozzles are determined from duct diameter, air velocity and the available response distance.
