Ventilation in a spray booth establishes a controlled airflow around the operator and workpiece, carries overspray toward the filters and supplies the replacement air removed by extraction. Stable airflow supports both working conditions and finish consistency.
Why booth ventilation performance matters
Insufficient airflow allows overspray to accumulate or escape. Excessive or turbulent airflow can disturb the spray pattern, draw dust into the booth and increase heating demand. The design must balance capture, air distribution, temperature and pressure.
Airflow configurations
Cross-draft, semi-downdraft and downdraft arrangements direct air through the booth in different ways. The suitable configuration depends on part size, application position, booth geometry and quality objective. Extraction walls or water-curtain solutions can serve open industrial finishing processes where a full booth is not required.
Filtration stages
Supply filters protect the coating zone from incoming dust. Paint Stop media or labyrinth filters retain overspray in the exhaust. Vapours are not removed by ordinary particle media, so any VOC treatment is selected separately from compound and concentration data.
Make-up air and pressure
Every extracted air volume must be replaced. Filtered make-up air prevents excessive negative pressure and uncontrolled infiltration. Heating and air-handling equipment maintain the required process temperature, while controls coordinate supply and exhaust fans.
Energy and controls
Fan speed and heating can follow operating modes where safety and process requirements allow. Airflow cannot be reduced below the value required for safe application. Filter pressure and booth balance are monitored so that loaded media does not silently alter the process.
Safety and maintenance
Coatings and cleaning products are assessed for flammable vapours, ignition sources and applicable requirements. Maintenance includes filter changes, fan inspection, booth cleaning, lighting, seals and verification of airflow and controls.
