Policy context for an article first published in June 2022
The European Commission adopted the EU Zero Pollution Action Plan in May 2021 as part of the European Green Deal. Its 2050 vision is to reduce air, water and soil pollution to levels no longer considered harmful to health and natural ecosystems.
Milestones toward 2030 and 2050
The plan includes 2030 targets covering air quality, waste, plastics, nutrient losses, pesticides, ecosystem exposure and transport noise. Progress is monitored through the Zero Pollution Monitoring and Outlook framework. The long-term ambition remains prevention and reduction of pollution at source.
What this means for industrial facilities
Policy objectives are translated into sector-specific legislation, permits and technical obligations. Each factory must identify the requirements that apply to its emissions, workplace exposure, waste streams, water and energy use. A general policy target does not replace an application-specific assessment.
Industrial-air measures
Source capture, efficient duct networks, suitable separation and filtration, airflow control and documented maintenance can reduce uncontrolled industrial emissions. The chosen technology depends on whether the process produces dust, fume, mist, fibres, overspray or vapours.
Measure improvement
Useful projects establish baseline airflow, pressure and energy data, then verify performance after commissioning. This creates evidence for maintenance and future optimisation rather than relying on general environmental claims.
