In October 2022, the European Commission proposed tighter EU rules for ambient air and water pollution. The initiative formed part of the European Green Deal and the Zero Pollution Action Plan, with a focus on stronger standards, monitoring and protection of human health and ecosystems.
From proposal to revised air-quality rules
The 2022 proposal later developed into the revised EU Ambient Air Quality Directive, which entered into force on 10 December 2024. It aligns EU air-quality standards more closely with scientific recommendations and strengthens the framework for assessment, planning and public information.
Ambient air rules and industrial workplace controls are related but not interchangeable. A factory still needs to identify its specific obligations for worker exposure, industrial emissions, permits and waste, based on its processes and location.
Why source capture remains important
Industrial dust, fume, mist and vapours should be captured close to the point of generation. The selected treatment may include cyclonic separation, bag or cartridge filtration, mist separation, adsorption or wet scrubbing, depending on pollutant properties.
Design for continuing compliance
Airflow, filter pressure, fan condition, emissions-control stages and material discharge must remain observable after commissioning. A documented maintenance plan helps ensure that performance does not decline unnoticed.
